South Africa for Black Travelers: Entry Rules, Safety Numbers and Ride Apps (2026)
Updated: 5 days ago
Cape Town and Johannesburg are where most first trips to South Africa start. The country is visa-free for Americans, but it comes with real safety rules. Here is the practical side, checked 4 October 2026.
Entry for US passport holders
No visa for stays under 90 days.
Passport valid at least 30 days past your departure date, with 2 blank visa pages side by side. Airlines and border officers check this.
Yellow fever card only if you arrive from, or transit through, a yellow fever country.
Numbers to save
Police: 10111
Ambulance: 10177
Emergency from a mobile phone: 112
US Consulate General Cape Town: +27-21-702-7300 (after hours: 079-111-0391)
Getting around
Ride apps: Uber and Bolt.
Before you get in, match the plate, car, driver name and photo in the app. Meet your ride away from taxi ranks.
Know before you go
The US advisory for South Africa is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (May 2025).
Robbery and muggings are common in city centres after dark. Use a ride app at night instead of walking.
The State Department warns that South Africa has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. Share your live location with someone you trust.
Before you go
Enroll in the State Department's STEP program at mytravel.state.gov/s/step so the embassy can reach you in an emergency. For more African countries in one download, get the Black Travel Guide: Africa Edition on blacktravel.org.
